Aretas Partners is retained by boards and CEOs of public and private companies, and by the sponsors and operating partners who own them — when the question on the table is not who to hire, but which archetype of leader the situation actually requires, and whether the leadership system around them is built to convert AI ambition into measurable enterprise value.
Single-partner by design. Concentrated by discipline. Selective by necessity.
Two ideas, converging. One Greek philosophical. One historical. Both embedded in every engagement we conduct.
The central concept in Western ethical philosophy. Aristotle built the Nicomachean Ethics around it: aretē is the relentless, habitual striving toward the fullest expression of one's nature. Never a fixed state — always a continuous pursuit. We exist for organizations and leaders who embody this drive.
King of the Nabataeans at Petra's zenith. Full title: "Aretas, King of the Nabataeans, Lover of his People." He governed accountably, counseled those around him honestly, and was trusted precisely because his advice was grounded in truth. The archetype of the trusted advisor who combines authority with genuine care for outcomes.
Joe Ghory founded Aretas Partners around a conviction arrived at after more than a decade advising the most consequential leadership decisions in the technology, public-company, and private-capital markets: AI maturity is now the dominant source of enterprise value creation — for the boards and CEOs of public and private companies, and for the sponsors and operating partners who own them. Whether that thesis becomes value or stays a slide is a question of leadership specification, not technology.
The firm is retained on two practice surfaces. On the corporate surface: boards and CEOs of public companies, privately-held enterprises, and transformation-stage organizations. On the private-capital surface: sponsors, portfolio companies, operating-partner benches, and GP-level hires. Across both surfaces, the deepest expertise is in AI‑Strategy Alignment: the C-suite, board, and operating-partner roles that determine whether AI ambition becomes measurable enterprise value on the timeline that capital and competition demand.
Every Aretas engagement begins with the Aretas Alignment Audit — a proprietary three-phase diagnostic (Strategic Intent & Value Decomposition · AI‑Strategy Maturity · Leadership Archetype Selection) that translates ambiguous mandate language into a defensible leadership specification. The Audit is the firm's intellectual product: the discipline that converts the question "we need a transformation CEO" into a specific archetype — Architect, Optimizer, Transformer, or Translator — the situation actually requires.
Previously, as Global Head of the AI, Advanced Data & Analytics Practice at Russell Reynolds Associates, Joe completed more than 150 executive placements focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data and analytics leadership, and the broader technology officer roles at the convergence of AI, product, and digital strategy. He worked with the world's leading organizations in financial services, healthcare, technology, and professional services — and with private equity sponsors on pre- and post-deal leadership initiatives at their portfolio companies. The work spanned both audiences from the start: public-company boards commissioning Chief AI Officers and CEOs; family-held enterprises professionalizing the C-suite; PE platforms architecting Day-1 operating leadership for AI-driven value-creation plans.
Earlier, as a Partner at Riviera Partners, he continued that work — advising PE and VC investors on recruiting operating partners and C-level executives across their portfolios, with particular emphasis on AI and technology leadership for companies at growth and transformation inflections.
His operating background — product strategy and international expansion at VeriFone's GlobalBay Mobile Payments Group, cloud infrastructure and enterprise architecture at Riverbed Technology, and deal sourcing and diligence at Updata Partners — gives him a practitioner's understanding of what it actually takes to scale a technology organization. That understanding, applied through the discipline of retained search, is what Aretas Partners is built on.
A recognized voice on AI strategy and leadership architecture, Joe writes and speaks on AI-driven value creation across both private capital and public companies, board governance of AI in the public-company era, organizational design for AI-first enterprises, and the leadership archetypes that determine whether transformation succeeds. He holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of Cambridge and a B.A. in International Business and Politics from the University of California, Berkeley — where his undergraduate thesis explored predicting leadership success in global business and politics.
AI maturity is now the dominant source of enterprise value creation. For the boards and CEOs of public and private companies, and for the sponsors and operating partners who own them. Aretas Partners architects the leadership systems — the C‑suite, the operating‑partner bench, the board — that convert AI ambition into measurable enterprise value, on the timeline that capital and competition demand. We are retained when the next eighteen months will decide the decade.
The diagnostic that converts strategic intent into a defensible leadership specification.
